The summer finally arrived and with it my mum and her friend. I always look forward to see her and the assortment of various friends who arrive from small town just outside Prague to explore England. They usually disappear very early in the morning and come back late at night beaming with their treasures from charity shops, beaches or free leaflets from tourist information points. They get really exited when the waitress from tearoom gets the order right ('I managed the whole sentence !). They marvel at sheer number of people of different cultural and racial backgrounds and the choice of yogurts in supermarkets.
My mum on the other hand stays cool, because after nearly 14 years she knows it all and now is the perfect guide. Without thinking she works out complicated travel arrangements (How do we exactly get to Brighton ? Oh and what if we miss our stop ?!!! Brighton...), sorts out the visits to various museums and galleries in correct order, as her friends usually don't realise that to visit Hampton Court and National Gallery in one day is practically impossible. You see, you can visit Prague Castle and National Museum (and probably another couple of museums in between) AND you can walk it !
The visits are usually 'enhanced' by experiencing a real 'English life' (no idea what's that either...) in a form of my husband, who with his dry sense of humour usually mentions something silly, which those poor friends of my mum's take quite seriously. He also keeps them on their toes by ordering Indian or Chinese food or telling them with a straight face that when the sugar runs out they need to go back home. (Me & my husband don't take sugar, so we always buy some for our guests).
So far, this has very little to do with crafting and that's how it usually is - to accommodate our guests my craft room is turned in to a guest room and for two weeks I am turfed out... Although I don't get to do much crafting, I get to talk to my mum about new craft books, colours or fabric materials. My mum is a potter and
runs pottery classes from her studio at home, so we always discuss new projects and bounce off ideas. When I finish writing this blog we are going to finish off decorating our cakes that we started yesterday...
I hope you are having a fabulous sunny Sunday and next week I will be back to crafting ! Until then, you can always pop in to
Handmade Harbour and soak up the craftiness there...
Oh gosh, that cake looks amazing. It's nice to have a chatter with somebody who loves crafting as much as yourself. Shame about being chucked out of your craft room, but it makes up for it by having nice visitors. :0)
ReplyDeleteIt made me smile that they marvel at yogurts in the supermarket- I always love going to supermarkets in other countries, and all the 'exotic' and different produce they sell, and I've wondered before what people coming here would think of English supermarket stock!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic cake. Your cakes always make me hungry, but also wonder who could bear to eat them they are so beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThis must have taken for ever to make.So beautiful
ReplyDeleteIt's so nice to see things from a different perspective, I think. Hope you enjoy having your mum and her friends to stay - losing your craft room temporarily is a small price, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteThat cake looks amazing!
ReplyDeleteHope you have a great time with your mum, it's always good to have someone that likes to talk about your ideas too :)

ReplyDeleteYes, loosing temporarily craft room is very small price to pay - I am definitelly not complaining. But, just found out that mum re-arranged my fabric stash in different colour combinations and I can not find my taylor scissors. Oh, well...
ReplyDeleteThanks about your lovely comments on my cake, it was fun to make and tasted really good (chocolate cake with orange chocolate ganashe...)
Catch 22 then - lovely to have mum down, not so lovely to be kicked out of your craft room.
ReplyDeleteHowever craft books always make a good topic in my mind.

ReplyDeleteIt's rather lovely having guests to stay when they are so excited about their excursions and crafting, and, even better when one of them is your mum :)
